Does the smoked option require a colored led bulb and is a load equalizer required when switching to a 3157 led?

You should select a red-color LED bulb if you're using the smoked option, lest you'd have a gray -vs- bright gray light when braking. Given that you're it for a taillight only, typically, a load equalizer isn't required. That sort of equipment is only needed converting incandescent turn signals to LED lights.
