I have a 1996 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200. If I buy this will it work and do I have to do anything or will it plug in with out having to wire it

The lens cover itself is requires no modifications of any kind in order to replace the stock taillight. What you do need, however, an LED light bulb to replace the stock incandescent bulb. The reason being, this lens housing is formed specifically to work with LEDs bulbs. Some LED bulbs require a load equalizer in order to function properly, and that's where some wiring modifications are required. The good news is that we stock an 1157-type LED bulb that has a build-in load equalizer in the form of a Philips Vision LED 1157 Taillight Bulb that'll fit your Sportster without any wiring modifications required. Yes, the bulb is a little more expensive, but you wouldn't need to purchase a separate load equalizer in order for it to function correctly.

It depends on the bulb that your machine uses, whether it is a 1157 or 3157, you would want to purchase the LED version of the one your bulb socket requires. If you're unaware of what your bike takes, just let us know what you're riding and we'll be happy to find the correct bulb for you!
does it actually require LED bulbs or can you use stock bulbs and just swap out lens?

This particular taillight is equipped with an LED circuit board that plugs into the OEM bulb socket. The LED board requires that the inside of the lens, and its interface with the OEM taillight mount, be shaped different to accommodate said board. If you're looking to replace the rear taillight lens only, we have the Drag Specialties Laydown Taillight Assembly. That kit includes everything you need to replace the OEM taillight in a laydown style that doesn't use an LED light element.
